About Gary Evident Counsellor in Brighton and Hove
I am originally from London and have lived, studied and worked in Essex, Manchester, Oxford and now Brighton and Hove. Prior to training as a counsellor, I worked extensively in the social care sector and in the criminal justice system in a variety of posts and settings thoughtout Sussex and Brighton and Hove. Much of that work has involved boundaried and therapeutic work helping people with alcohol and drug problems, complex emotional and mental health difficulties, including those who have self-harmed and been actively suicidal.
I qualified as a counsellor from Brighton University in 2004, and have been accredited by the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) , the largest regulating body for counsellors in the United Kingdom, since 2009. Accreditation requires that I undertake extensive and regular continuing professional development, and I have completed a range of post-qualifying courses in Transactional Analysis, Cognitive Behavioural, Solution Focussed and Psychodynamic therapy. My practice is also increasingly influenced by mindfulness psychology and body focussing approaches that emphasis our day-to-day felt experience. I have regular supervision by a BACP accredited Supervisor who provides oversight of all my work with clients, and helps me maintain high professional standards.
I have personally benefitted from individual counselling, both short and long-term, on several occasions in my life. I feel that such experience is fundamental to how I am as a person, and how I work therapeutically with counselling clients.
I hold a Post-Graduate Diploma in Counselling and Psychotherapy from Brighton University and have been accredited with BACP since 2009. I also hold B.A. (Philosophy and Politics) and Msc. (Applied Social Studies) degrees from Manchester and Oxford University respectively. I am a qualified Social Worker, having obtained my Certificate of Qualification in Social Work in 1991.
